Voluma

At East Bay Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, we want to offer our patients the best options to satisfy their needs. That is why we offer Voluma for our clients. Voluma is a revolutionary dermal filler that is used to lift and volumize the cheeks, cheekbones, and jawline. This product helps our patients achieve the more youthful look that they want and lasts for 2-3 years before another treatment is needed!

How Does it Work?

Voluma is a hyaluronic acid filler that is injected deep into the targeted tissue that refills areas that have been deflated by natural aging processes. Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is naturally produced by your body, and overtime is naturally processed and disposed of. This means that the risks are low, and this approach is the only FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved approach to contour and volumize the middle portion of the face. While other options suggest they offer the same results, they typically only last between six and nine months, about four times less than Voluma!

One of the most significant advantages of Voluma over other dermal fillers is that Voluma is injected deep into the tissue. This allows for a large portion of the lifting effect that is found from this product.

Do the Injections Hurt?

Voluma’s proprietary mixture also contains some lidocaine. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that helps to numb the areas that it contacts, so many patients describe the entire process as very comfortable. Additionally, the product is applied with a very fine gauge needle, which only produces an initial “small pinch.” As the product is injected, patients have told us that they do feel some pressure in the area being treated but did not describe the process as uncomfortable.

When Will Results be Apparent?

The effects of Voluma are immediate. You will be able to recognize a difference and improvement following your treatments immediately. Over the next few days, you may notice some small changes as the injection sites heal and any redness subsides.

The treatment sessions typically take about an hour to complete.

How Many Syringes are Needed for Treatment?

While the quantity of the product and the treatment time can vary for each patient, we typically see that patients in their thirties who are experiencing some minimal sagging can have great results with just a single syringe. Patients who are older or have experienced more moderate sagging in their midface may require two or more syringes to complete their treatment.

How to Prepare for Treatments

If you have questions or concerns about your treatment, always be sure to ask our staff. At East Bay Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, we pride ourselves on patient care and education, so never hesitate to ask a question. However, treatment preparation for Voluma is often very straightforward for our patients. In general, we ask that patients:

  • Stop taking nonessential vitamins or herbal supplements

  • Stop taking pain medication like aspirin or Advil. Discontinuing the use of these products helps to lessen the chances or severity of bruising from your treatment.

  • If you swell easily, ask our staff if you should take Claritin or Zyrtec in advance to help reduce swelling from your procedure.

  • Refrain from heavy alcohol consumption the night before your treatment, and for a day following treatment.
